Since he dropped the overtly personal ‘Love Story‘ last year, singer-songwriter-rapper Yelawolf has taken a bit of a low profile. The 18-song opus, which debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200, featured hit singles such as the Eminem-featuring ‘Best Friend’ and ‘Whiskey in a Bottle‘. And the Alabama native is not done singing about alcohol if his new single is anything to go by. ‘Daylight’ starts off with a somber, guitar-driven into where Yela calls “Whiskey my only friend” and throughout the song he talks about his relationship with the bottle with a sprinkling of humor. But from that intro you get the impression that it’s a love-hate affair between him and the hard stuff. The instrumental is a glorious fusion of signature hip hop drums and beautifully executed folk music, fiddles and all.
In the video Yelawolf wakes up shirtless, presumably from a night of heavy indulgence. But his first move after donning his hat and sleeveless shirt is to reach for a bottle of Jack Daniels. Outside it’s a rainy morning, but that doesn’t stop him from stepping out from the porch of his house and getting soaked. Though he seems to be having fun gulping down from the bottle and spraying the liquor from his mouth, you get a sense of the loneliness and fear an alcoholic battles with daily.
