Lighting up the UK dancehall scene with a catchy fusion of afrobeat and reggaeton is an ambitious singer-songwriter-producer by the name XL. Citing reggae king Bob Marley and Nigerian afrobeat legend Fela Kuti as influences, XL has created a sound that is tailor made for clubs and parties. He also hails from Nigeria and is following hard in the footsteps of yet another countryman, Burna Boy, cooking up that heat for dancefloors around the world. UK radio hasn’t taken long to take note of XL; BBC had his previous single ‘Money Talks’, in heavy rotation. The budding dancehall star has also garnered plenty of attention in his native Nigeria. His afro-pop take on WSTRN’s hit ‘In2‘ earned XL the chance to open for the celebrated West London collective on a recent tour. Most recently XL had the chance to share the stage with renowned reggae star Gyptian during a series of UK gigs.
Far from slowing down to savor his successes, XL is capitalizing on the attention he has gained by releasing a new song and its accompanying video. His new jam, ‘Down Low’ is a laid back blend of R&B and dancehall flavored with a dash of African percussion. It is a celebration of sexy women from around the world that will have the listener gyrating wildly from the first note. Helping XL bring out the sensuality in the music is Australian songstress Elesia Iimura, who also makes an appearance in the video.
