Today there’s a treat for hip hop fans who don’t mind their music served with a funky twist, or with a futuristic lean. It is brought to you courtesy of a newly formed group I really and truly hope we’ll be hearing a lot more from. WOKE is made up of multi-instrumentalists/producers Flying Lotus and Thundercat and far-out Seattle rap duo Shabazz Palaces. Joining this collection of artists known for their experimental, barrier-breaking creations on their first record is yet another trailblazer; legendary funk god George Clinton. The result is not unlike the sound you heard on Kendrick Lamar’s highly successful sophomore album ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’. It also bears a close resemblance to the “future sound of modern funk” that Dâm-Funk has made a name for himself with.
‘The Lavishments of Light Looking’ is more of an experience than a song so you better strap in when the wavy synths check in. It’s like losing yourself in a glowing cocoon of sound which is actually a time-travel capsule sending you back to the seventies before catapulting you into the 2020s. The track is part of the Adult Swim Single series under which cuts by Danny Brown, Skrillex and other artists have previously been released.
