In May 2015, the National Association of Music Merchants released a report that embodied the hopes and dreams of parents and teachers regarding music education. In a survey, it was found that given the choice, teachers, and parents, would rather cut any other more than music and arts. In this survey, parents and teachers were asked which program they would be most willing to cut if they were faced with budget constraints. An overwhelming 73% of parents and 83% of teachers believed that budget cuts in music education were detrimental to students.
But in reality, when faced with budget cuts, the first programs to go are music and arts programs, much to the dismay of parents and teachers alike. Public schools have virtually been stripped of their music programs. Having a music program is more than just indulging kids. Playing music is vital and transformational to every student’s life. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith said: “If I didn’t have music education in school, I probably would have ended up in jail or dead. Instead, I ended up in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”
We will bet our eyelids that given the choice, any parent would rather have their kid on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame than in jail or six feet under. So what are we waiting for? Donate $25 and help a child get a spot in a music program through Little Kids Rock. You were going to blow that $25 on one of the seven deadly sins anyway. www.wedoitfortheloveofmusic.com wants you to get into paradise so get donating!
