Education Through Music was founded to promote the integration of music into the curricula of disadvantaged schools. The organization partners with inner city schools to provide all students with music as a core subject and to create communities that value the arts. Education Through Music’s mission is to promote the use of music in schools as a means of enhancing students’ academic performance and general development.
Many schools in low-income communities have no music programs and every child deserves a well-rounded education that includes music. ETM builds long-term relationships with inner-city schools to ensure the sustainability of the music programs so that every child can benefit. They ensure high-quality instruction by hiring qualified music teachers to help facilitate the programs. ETM’s work has been overwhelmingly life-changing for the students; “Music taught me that I can do things that I never thought of doing,” said a fifth grade student at one of the partner schools.
Another said; “Ever since I started playing the violin, I started to have more confidence in my work, and more self-respect.” The music programs not only help students develop academically, they also provide an opportunity for the kids to gain self confidence. In 2015, Education Through Music served over 20,000 students and 47 in inner-city schools in New York City and over 8,000 children through its affiliate programs with other organizations.
