Say you live up to 95 years old, which is totally not going to happen but let’s just say you do, can you imagine how it would in no way be a bed of roses. 95-year-old Anna Benton suffers from Alzheimer’s. That’s the disease that accounts for over 60% of cases of dementia and affects 1 in 10 people over the age of 65. In her youth, Anna absolutely worshipped the famous, cigarette-smoking and martini-drinking Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Joey Bishop, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford.
The Rat Pack’s glamorous alliances and carefree sophistication defined a generation. More importantly, the Rat Pack symbolized Anna’s youth, when she was a confident, vibrant 20-year-old woman painting the town red. For one magical afternoon, Anna became that confident, vibrant 20-year-old as she listened to songs made popular by the Rat Pack.
Her favorite, Sinatra’s version of ‘It Had to Be You,’ got her on her feet to dance, something she hadn’t done in ages. I’d be the first to admit that I’m terrified of getting old, man the dementia, the hip replacements, the diapers, the burying loved ones, but I think I could manage it well enough if I still had music in my life. And No! You are still not living up to 95.
