The Weeknd is back. And he has a brand new album, you will be glad to know. Let’s agree, Abel Tesfaye owned 2015 with his epic ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’, an album that was the most streamed LP at one point, won a top-five spot in Rolling Stone’s top 50 albums of the year and scored a Grammy. Since the release of that monster third full-length the Toronto native has been on the road on The Madness Fall Tour and in the studio working on his next project. Yesterday he finally let the world in on what he’s been laboring on with the tweet “I come alive in the fall”. But what set tongues wagging wasn’t the hope of new Weeknd music, it was the picture that accompanied the tweet, which revealed Abel without his trademark “pineapple” hairdo.

But this wasn’t the first glimpse of the new-look Weeknd the world was getting. A few hours earlier he tweeted a picture of himself enclosed in the cover art for a new album, which would be titled ‘Starboy’. The latest in this series of posts was a snippet of the album’s title track and the news that the album was available for pre-order. You can stream the first Starboy single, which features contributions from legendary funk/disco duo Daft Punk, from The Weeknd’s website.
If you thought he would finally mellow out in his new album, The Weeknd dismisses such notions straight out the gate. “There are new inspirations on this album. The production feels aggressive but still sexy,” he said in an interview with VMAN. And you will hear it in the snippet of ‘Starboy’ below. Among the “new inspirations” are The Smiths, DeBarge and Prince who The Weeknd says “play roles” in the new project.
Starboy the album drops in November 25, take note.
