A few hours after announcing his musical return and suave new cut, enigmatic R&B star The Weeknd unveiled the first song from the album he had christened ‘Starboy‘, also its title track. ‘Starboy’ was an Apple Music exclusive and when the video for the song did finally appear, it was also only available on the Apple streaming platform. But it was only a matter of time before it was made available to the wider public via Vevo.
The Grant Singer-directed video finds The Weeknd dressed in a grey suit tied up in a chair and gagged. At the other end of the table is a masked villain dressed in all black. As he struggles the thug walks over and asphyxiates the singer with a polyethene bag. As he walks away, having accomplished his mission, he pulls off the mask to reveal himself as the new Weeknd; a swanky flat-top sitting where the uniquely shaped dreads used to stand. As he struts along the dark corridor we see his musical collaborators on the tune, Daft Punk, immortalized in a sleek portrait. He then finds a glowing cross which he uses to wreak havoc on the old Weeknd’s crib, crushing plaques and blowing up his closet. The destructive mission is completed in style as the reborn Weeknd hops into one of the flashy sports cars and drives off into the night. Blink and you’ll miss the transformation of his driving companion.
