A few weeks back rapper Scott Mescudi, known to the world as Kid Cudi, made it known that he’d be shutting off the world as he sought professional help. His decision to check himself into rehab for depression and suicidal urges drew widespread support from the hip hop family and beyond. (The seemingly unsympathetic Drake was quickly shut down with a flurry of angry Twitter messages). But even when announcing his departure Cudder promised the new stuff would keep coming. Two weeks ago he blessed us with this shadowy clip for ‘Frequency‘ off his upcoming ‘Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin” album. There is no release date for the project as yet but Cudi assured fans that his absence would not affect its release.
As a statement of intent the video for ‘Surfin”, which was released simultaneously with Frequency, has been unleashed. An upbeat expression of self-belief, the song might seem to contradict Kid Cudi’s present state of mind. “I ain’t ridin no waves, too busy making my own waves, baby/separate on my own wave,” the hook goes. You can’t help but get busy to the Higher Ground-esque arrangement, agreeing with every word being sang and spat (come to think of it the shaven beard in the visual could be a nod to Stevie Wonder). The video, directed by Cudi himself, is a trippy affair depicting a hazy party with the darkness pierced by looming laser lights. In the intermittent light you will spot a few familiar faces including those of Will Smith’s offspring, Willow and Jaden. The Pharrell Williams who is featured in the song doesn’t appear among the revelers, but A$AP Rocky does.
