Having been a part of XXL’s Freshman Class of 2014, signed with Roc Nation a year ago and penned a Grammy-nominated hit with Kanye West, it’s a mystery why Vic Mensa hasn’t yet dropped a full-length album. What has he been doing for the past two years since he burst onto the mainstream? Well, Vic is finally coming clean and explaining what’s been happening behind the scenes. If you head over to his website you’ll find an open letter in which the Chicago MC pours out his heart on his anxiety and depression among (many) other things. Vic has chaneled all these things he’s been dealing with into a seven-track EP entitled ‘There’s Alot Going On’, which you can stream from his site. The project is also available for streaming on TIDAL.
If there was to be a rap equivalent of Usher’s ‘Confessions’, the title track of Mensa’s new offering would be it. There’s practically nothing that’s off limits as he owns up to his past failings, including cheating on his girl and venting his undealt-with emotions on the wrong people. At times I almost cringed at all the details coming out. But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel: “Cleaned out my closet got rid of all of my demons/ if you learned one thing from my journey ni**a, it’s don’t stop believing.” The video features a half-naked Mensa railing at three walls and the camera lens for almost six minutes. It may seem like nothing special but the clip drew praise from Ye. He went on Twitter to say “I love this video. Very creative.”
