Thanks largely to Kendrick Lamar, everyone with ears has probably heard of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). But few are acquainted with the lyrical prowess of the record company’s co-president Punch. Besides featuring in the projects of TDE signees such as Ab-Soul, Punch has released a bunch of one off singles. Last summer he availed the raw, hard-hitting ‘Untitled‘ for free download and followed it up with more freebies like ‘A Project Mind’, ’25’ and ‘Fear’, all cast in that basic boom-bap mold. Even with all these tight releases, Terrence Henderson, better known as Punch, has kept folks guessing as to whether a full-length project is on the horizon, or if such a thing will ever see the light of day.
We’re still no closer to an answer, but we do have yet another dope Punch track to talk about and bop to. ‘Uninspired’ tells the story of a ghetto denizen striving in the hope of a better existence but faltering along the way. “Broken in the street, crushed like our dreams, before we realized they could be achieved,” Punch spits, forcing us to face the grim realities of life in the hood. The effortless ebb and flow of the rhymes, the stripped-down instrumental and the topic addressed all call to mind the gems Nas blessed us with in ‘Illmatic’.
The fact that Uninspired is not available for free download will give fans hope that Punch is finally up to a full album. But I wouldn’t hold my breath.
