Even as first ‘The Life Of Pablo’ single to be released outside of Tidal begins to do the rounds, the Jay Z-owned streaming service have published the streaming figures for Kanye West’s latest album. And they are not trivial. TLOP was streamed a staggering 250 million times in the 10 days succeeding its release. Surely it would have been on top of the singles charts if it was released through conventional channels. The numbers were helped in no small way by Yeezus himself following his Twitter plea to his followers to sign up to the service. And sign up they did; Tidal’s subscriber base jumped more than 100% from 1 million to 2.5 million. Half of these customers are signed up to the hi-fidelity service which costs $19.99 per month. That’s not the limit of the sway Ye holds over Tidal; the service recently extended its free trial period to allow new users to get a taste of the new TLOP with a new version of ‘Wolves’, a track that features Sia and Vic Mensa.
Tidal must therefore be have been worried by last week’s release of the remake of the infamous ‘Famous’ on Apple Music and Spotify. The song, which features Rihanna, was billed by Def Jam as the first official The Life Of Pablo single. It appears that the rest of the album will be made available on these popular streaming platforms sooner rather than later. For now you can take a listen to Famous on Spotify below.
