As the year draws to a close, we tend to look back with fondness, or sadness over what we’ve left behind. We also look forward to a new year hoping that some things will happen. Here are some of the things we’d love to see happen in 2017. Feel free to add yours in the comments.
New Eminem album: This wish we’re more or less guaranteed to get as Eminem has announced that he’s at work on a new album. Along with the assurance he gave us in October of a soon-coming project, Slimshady slipped us a sort of freestyle that we’re not sure will appear in the album. But it was vintage Slim, straight up fire, laced with political references this time. Should there be a ninth Eminem album sometime in the course of 2017, our lives will be that little bit more colorful.
J. Cole & Kendrick Lamar collab: This is the one collaborative effort that has been in the rumor mill for far too long. The two rappers showed crazy chemistry on ‘Forbidden Fruit’ off J. Cole’s ‘Born Sinner’ project and ever since then hip hop heads have been praying for a joint album, even mixtape. Their prayers seemed to have been answered when ‘Black Friday’ dropped in November 2015 with the two rappers spitting on tracks from each other’s albums. Adding fuel to the fire, Kendrick’s TDE stable-mate Ab-Soul announced a couple of weeks back that there would definitely be a joint album. Let’s wait and see if 2017 will be the year.
No deaths: It’s been a harrowing year; we’ve lost some of the most revered names in music within the past 12 months. Toward the beginning we lost British icon David Bowie and before we had fully recovered, we got news that the inimitable Prince was no more. While there was a brief reprieve for the music world during summer, the specter of death still lingered; Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer of a generation, passed away in June. And when we thought the Grim Reaper was done for the year, he stole away master songwriter Leonard Cohen, pop star George Michael and Rick Parfitt, one half of the legendary Status Quo.
Lil Wayne doing what he does best: Let 2017 be the year Tunechi finally sorts out his beef with Cash Money, gets into full health and focuses on what he does best; slaughtering mics. However they do it, we need him and his one-time mentor Birdman to iron out their seemingly endless tiff so that the long-overdue Carter V can see the light of day. If he needs to stay off the lean for good, let Weezy do it. We don’t want 2017 tainted with reports of seizures and emergency landings. Like we said in the point above; no more deaths (hope y’all are listening Kanye, Kid Cudi).
