Steve Gunn burst onto the music scene in 2005 as a member of experimental rock outfit GHQ. The guitarist played with the group for two years but even before he quit the outfit in 2007 he had began working on his own material. This explains how his self-titled solo debut was released on the same year he quit the band in the course of his career he released 11 other albums as well as an EP. Among those recordings was 2010’s ‘Camel Throat’ which was made available only in cassette form- not surprising considering that Gunn first fell in love with music while listening to tapes from his elder sister. Besides his work with GHQ Gunn is known for his role as a part of Kurt Vile’s backing band, The Violators. In fact his last album, released just last year, was collaborative effort with El Cabrito Matador.
Continuing his prolific streak, Steve is already preparing to release album number 14 this summer. ‘Eyes on the Lines‘ will be out June 3. The 9-track recording will be released on Matador Records and to warm us up to the new full-length Steve has released ‘Conditions Wild’ along with its mind-bending video. Described as his “most accessible song to date”, the tune is psychedelic yet melodic and soothing. Gunn’s voice is mellow yet compelling in the same way the guitarwork is both readily enjoyable and intricate. You get the feeling that a lot has gone into the making of the song but you are spared the details and presented with an immediately likeable ditty. As for the visuals, they are a sketchy collage of images telling a story of a day in the wild spent enjoying nature and getting pally with a bear.
