Just the other day we were in awe at how Drake eclipsed Michael Jackson’s 32-year record for the most American Music Awards nominations but apparently the 6 god was not done. Yesterday the nominees for the Soul Train Awards were named and Drizzy again bagged the most nods. With a total of 12, he has as many nominations as there are award categories.
Drake is among six nominees for the prestigious Album of the Year award where his record-breaking ‘Views’ faces competition from Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’, Kanye West’s ‘The Life Of Pablo’, Bryson Tiller’s ‘Trapsoul’ and DJ Khaled’s ‘Major Keys’. He and Khaled could share an award if ‘For Free’ wins the Best Collaboration award. But he could also win it with now ex-girlfriend Rihanna for the seductive ‘Work’. That song’s video has won Drake yet another nomination in the Video of the Year category. Here the Canadian rapper-singer is again competing with himself; ‘Hotline Bling’’s video is also up for this accolade.
Beyoncé is not too far behind Drake, boasting a total of eight nominations. Beside her Album of the Year nom, the ‘Formation’ star is up for Best R&B/Soul Female Artist, Song of the Year and Video of the Year, where she has two nominations. It comes as no surprise that her powerful ‘Freedom’ single which features Kendrick Lamar is in the running for the Best Collaboration award. Right behind Queen Bey is Rihanna with seven nods, most of them for Work. Anderson .Paak, Bryson Tiller and Chance the Rapper are once again facing off for the Best New Artist award. See the full list of nominees here.
The Soul Train Awards ceremony will be held at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on November 7 and for the second year running, Erykah Badu will host proceedings. After winning praise for the way she tore into Iggy Azalea last year, we can’t wait to see what the neo-soul queen has in her bag of tricks.
Here are some highlights from last year’s Soul Train Awards to whet your appetite.
