If you’ve been searching for that evasive combination of an uncompromising sound with uncompromising truth, your search ends here. Here to meet your sonic needs is a five-piece band from Duncan, British Columbia. Theirs is a brand of melodic hard rock complete with all the ruthless chugging, gut-wrenching bass and intense drums. But what they have which you won’t find with most other acts in this genre is a deft interplay of male and female leading vocals. Poontz and DittyBakes provide this sublime combination while the aptly named Spaz Gut takes care of the bass department. On the guitars and drums are Dub-G and Carcus respectively. Here is how Shobocon explains its name (bet you were wondering what it means): “A state of musically induced hallucination, followed by over powering feelings of well being”. Wonder no more.
The band just released their debut album a couple of hours ago. Entitled ‘O
N€’, it is a 12-strong set of hard-hitting cuts delivered with attitude and verve. Sure there’s a few weak spots that can do with a bit of strengthening, but you can’t argue that Shobocon are on to something. With time they will no doubt sound like a slightly harder version of Paramore. You can sample O N€ for yourself here. Along with their first album the group has released their first ever video. It’s for ‘The Cull’, one of the songs on the album. Check it out below. The message of the song is a little bit unsettling- but you should view it to form your own opinion.
