Representing Nashville, Tennessee is a young MC not afraid to think and rhyme outside the box. Going by the name ShaManic, he aims to bring to hip hop all the good things that his hometown is known for. He likes his hip hop with a twist of the unexpected: “I’m always trying to incorporate something new. If you’re not doing something new, what’s the point?” His debut album ‘The Artist‘ goes some way to proving ShaManic’s point; it’s a real mixed bag, nothing like your typical rap album. Yes he raps, but the content of his rhymes is not your usual menu of violence, sex and braggadocio. The beats on which he does his thing practically traverse the gamut of genres.
The Artist’s only promotional single so far is ‘Mindless’ and it’s enough to inform you that ShaManic is not your run-of-the-mill rap artist. Check out the opening line: “Fresh out of the psychiatric ward with the award for the most reformed case in the class/ threw the accolade away in the trash before I hopped the next train headed out of Nashville.” The next few verses are spent telling the rest of the story of his escape from the looney bin, and recapture. It’s quite a fun listen; a minimalistic track with two or three repeated guitar chords allows you to focus on ShaManic’s voice. At least that’s what I, and radio personality DJ Antonio Fresco, think. What about you, our discerning reader? Hate it or Love it?
