“In a day and age of instant gratification and everything moving so fast, we wanted to do the exact opposite.” This is what motivated Icelandic art-pop group Sigur Ròs’ latest artistic venture, which some may question as a work of art at all. Basically what they’ve done is mount a camera on the dashboard of a car and embark on a long drive round the Icelandic coastline. During the 1,332km journey circumnavigates the entire island everything captured by the onboard camera will be broadcasted live on national TV in Iceland. The experience will also be transmitted to the world in real time via YouTube.
As viewers follow along, taking in the beauty of Nordic island’s landscapes they will be serenaded by an instrumental that is derived from the group’s latest song ‘Óveður‘ and an as yet unreleased song. It’s not just the two songs being played slowly over and over; an innovative software generates the soundtrack minute by minute using elements from the songs creating a fresh new sound to accompany you every minute of the way. If you’ve always wanted to go on a tour of Iceland but have never got round to doing it, Sigur Ròs are offering you a free guided expedition. But more than that, with their typically transcendent sound, they are really taking you on a spiritually refreshing experience; a much needed getaway from your daily helter-skelter. If you want to drop what you’re doing and hop on board, don’t feel guilty, just do it.
