Frank Vincent Zappa was the son of Sicilian immigrant Francis Vincent Zappa Sr. Being the music genius that he was, Frank Zappa was one eccentric SOB-He named his kids Diva Thin Muffin, Dweezil, and Moon Unit because why the hell not? With the eccentricity came hard-dying rumors that included something about eating poop on-stage, which turned out to be just another Rock and Roll myth.
‘Captain Kangaroo’s faithful sidekick, ‘Mr. Green Jeans,’ played by Hugh ‘Lumpy’ Brannum, was Frank Zappa’s father.
Is It True?
Neither Frank Zappa, nor his real father Frank Vincent Zappa Sr. was related to Hugh Brannum. The legend was born after Zappa’s 1969 album ‘Hot Rats’ which included a track titled ‘Son of Mr. Green Genes.’ Someone took one look at the title, despite the misspelling, and took it literally. That’s seriously all it took for the legend to be born.
Zappa himself said of the rumor: “Because I recorded a song called ‘Son of Mr. Green Genes’ on the ‘Hot Rats’ album in 1969, people have believed for years that the character with that name on the ‘Captain Kangaroo’ TV show was my real dad. No, he was not.” Hugh Brannum did have a son, but his name was Tom, born June 17, 1935.
