Grammy Award-winning pianist Robert Glasper’s last outing was his summer 2015 collection of jazzified pop and R&B covers recorded live at Capitol Studios. If you’re not quite into the live jazz trio format you will be happy to hear that the Texan has a new studio project in the works. Scheduled for release on May 27, ‘Everything’s Beautiful’ is more along the lines of the ‘Black Radio‘ recordings but is centered around trumpet the works of legend Miles Davis. Glasper gave us the first dose of what promises to be yet another epic fusion of R&B and jazz at the beginning of April with the hip hop-flavored ‘Violets’ that featured Foreign Exchange rapper/singer Phonte. ‘Ghetto Walkin’‘, in which he enlisted the help of frequent collaborator Bilal, was released a few weeks later.
The latest teaser from Everything’s Beautiful is ‘I’m Leaving You’ which offers a more retro take on contemporary jazz. The late great Miles was known more for his skills on the horn but his uniquely husky voice is the backbone of this new song. It is a short recording of him saying “wait a minute” but, as Glasper correctly thought, there’s enough attitude and mystery in the phrase to make it the tune’s centerpiece. Having said that it would be criminal not to mention Ledisi’s contributions; she not only lends her magical vocals to the track, but also her proven songwriting talents. Adding luscious guitar licks to the mix is celebrated jazz man John Scofield who played with Miles himself. The song is a testament to raw creativity and proof that there is jazz you can dance to.
Pre-order Everything’s Beautiful and enjoy the above three tracks as you wait for the album’s arrival.
