For the past 12 years David Barkie has dedicated his life to music. When he was 18 he left home to follow his dream and he started by opening a studio storefront where he did plenty of writing and recording for other artists. The studio doubled up as his home; when the sun went down he would sleep on the floor. Part of paying dues was spending time at the feet of some of the industry’s leading producers such as Symbolyc One, currently in Kanye West’s Very GOOD Beats production team. Barkie hails from Upstate New York, a place with little association with music apart from the Woodstock Festival held there in the sixties. However, the locale is experiencing a musical renaissance of sorts with dozens of fresh indie acts springing up.
Since 2013 Barkie has been chaneling his experience into a new project he has named ‘Rhythm Rug’. Through this project he hopes to blend sounds inspired by childhood idols such as Earth Wind & Fire, Pink Floyd and the Jackson 5 with modern hip hop and elements of pop. ‘The Giver’ is the first single from Rhythm Rug getting him off to a positive, energetic start. There’s a bit of Krayzie Bone in the way Barkie delivers his message of peace and hope to the world to humanity. In particular he is urging us to love as it “brings joy in heart of the giver, peace to the one who receives.” His style could do with a bit of refinement but there’s no doubt that Rhythm Rug has carved a niche for himself and will continue to give us quality music that lifts our spirits.
Rhythm Rug is currently at work on a full-length record. Two new singles are expected to be released prior to the album’s street date.
