This week’s single double comes from Kent-based quartet Red Light Runner composed of ex-members two of the UK’s top bands; The Chase Scene and Arcaine. It was eight years ago that Red Light Runner first took shape and after disbanding in 2008, Dan Balsom (vocals/guitar), Russell France (guitar), Joe Michael (drums) and Lee Vickery (bass) reunited in 2014 determined give their lovechild another lease of life. The double salvo ‘Lucky Thirteen/Just Might Find’ is composed of two solid compositions that show the Kent crew means business.
In ‘Just Might Find’ Dan Balsom sings about a relationship that’s going south. Though there’s still time to repair the damage, the other half is making no effort to do so. “That’s just fine, but don’t expect my sympathy” he cries in a vengeful tone. Listening to this track its hard to imagine the singers and players are not nondescript teens out to prove a point. They sound as passionate and hungry though they really are seasoned vets in the punk realms. But the polished execution on the guitars, drums and vox betray the group’s experience. I have to confess of the two songs, ‘Lucky Thirteen’ has a shade more appeal to me. Maybe it’s the call to spin the wheel and take a chance without fearing the outcome. Maybe it’s the melodic chugging on the verses. Whatever it is, it’s sunk its tentacles into me and it’s too late. How about you, venerated reader. Hate it or Love it?
