Whenever you hear Top Dawg Entertainment, your eyes light up with memories of talents such as Kendrick Lamar, Isaiah Rashad, Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul. But it seems just about everyone at the label can put down some fire on wax if they feel the need to.
Today we have a new single from TDE co-president Terry ‘Punch’ Henderson. ‘Gold’ is a reflective number in which he talks about how he’s seen the words of wisdom he heard as a kid come to pass. “All my life I’ve been told/all that glitters ain’t gold/now that I’ve arrived I see these truths unfold/before my eyes in a world so cold,” is how the hook goes.
The instrumental is unhurried but belies a silent intensity, and the same can be said of Punch’s delivery. His rhymes are not just the detached observation they appear to be; they are a snide jab at MCs who have forgotten where they came from.
Gold is not the first, but the latest in a string of singles the Top Dawg exec has released in the course of the year. Before it he dropped the soulful ’40yrs’ in September, and prior to that he released ‘Kings’, ‘Gone’ and ‘Uninspired‘. In a March Billboard interview Punch promised an album was in the pipeline so if you’ve been waiting on new heat from Top Dawg, this just could be the next in line.
