Long before he appeared on a leaked version of Drake’s monster hit ‘Controlla’, Popcaan had already distinguished himself as a global star. The Jamaican’s rise to fame began back in 2007 when he convinced dancehall star Vybz Kartel to sign him up to his label. A few years later Popcaan dropped the club banger ‘Clarks’ and it was all systems go from there. Following a slew of well-received mixtapes, the singer began attracting attention around the world. Among his admirers were Kanye West, who sampled his voice in Yeezus, and Drake, who would later recruit him on his biggest ever record.
To round off a busy 2016, Popcaan has released a video for his latest single ‘Nah Idle’. It is a word of advise to anyone who will listen that they will only achieve their goals by getting off their backside and working hard. The clip finds him huddled in a furry winter coat and Union Jack-emblazoned beanie, wandering the streets of Piccadilly and Chinatown in the UK capital’s West End. Included in the visual is an interpretation of his message in the form of a schoolboy in class surrounded by rowdy classmates.
