Tis the season for summer bangers and D.C. rapper Wale has given his fans something to wild out to in their poolside parties and barbecues. ‘My PYT’ dropped back in May as a prelude to Olubowale’s highly anticipated fifth album ‘Shine’. Though clearly inspired by Michael Jackson’s 1982 hit ‘P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing)’, the song will remind old school R&B lovers of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’ as well. And many besides Wale’s sizeable fan base will dig the way he has given the two classics a long overdue hip hop flavoring. They may or may not dig the heavily autotuned hook by Maybach Music rap-singer Sam Sneak who sounds not a little like embattled Cash Money MC Tyga.
On a personal level ‘My PYT’ has taken on a new, more significant, meaning for Wale following the recent birth of his daughter. But the Colin Tilley-directed video is all about making the most of the bright, shiny weather with a party and fun games. Flanked by models in eye-catching leotards, the 31 year-old raps about his ride-or-die chick. Besides the outfits, everything is drenched in bold colors, from the cars to the bread but the dance moves are just as arresting, including the little ‘Hotline Bling’ jig Wale does right at the end.
