At times you have to ask yourself if this man, this producer/MC who goes by the name Oddisee really ever sleeps. Wasn’t it just this past spring that he blessed us with a sumptuous mixtape double salvo? The Washington D.C.,-born, New York-based artist dropped the critically acclaimed ‘Alwasta‘ May 2016, a project even soul/R&B queen Jill Scott tipped her hat to. It was quickly followed by the absorbing instrumental ‘The Odd Tape‘ a little over a month later. Seeing how prolific
Seeing how prolific the 32 year-old is, perhaps it comes as little surprise that we will be having a new Oddisee project in the next couple of weeks. ‘The Iceberg‘ will hit stores February 24 and whoever is brave enough to download or cop it better be prepared for an unrelenting avalanche of truth. Over the course of the 12 tracks Oddisee dissects America with his powerful rhymes, forcing us to take a look at the nasty insides. But there is a message of hope; there is a way to fix the nation’s hurting, divided and unjust soul, though it’s not what President Trump would have had in mind.
The new single ‘Like Really’, is not really the first glimpse we’re getting of The Iceberg. In December, Oddisee gave us a first peek with the single ‘Things‘. While he attacked the materialistic mentality in that first track, in Like Really he takes on racial injustice with bare knuckles: “How do you police the streets of a neighborhood you do not engage in/ why a brother get three for a sack while your brother go free for a raping/ how you make a film about Egypt with all lead roles caucasian?”
Whew, some heavy food for thought right there.
