The ink is still drying on the deal they just signed with Victory Records and they’ll soon hit the road to hype their debut album which will be on shelves in fall. Things are looking up for Neurotic November, an in-your-face metalcore band based in Miami that started out as simply ‘two kids with a dream and an idea’. The two kids were vocalist Dirty Dick A.K.A Dirty, or DD, and Bear, the band’s bassist. Music started revealing itself as more than just a hobby to Dirty in 2004 but he didn’t do much with it until fate united him with Bear five years later. The result of this creative union would be seen in 2012 when the EP Passive May was dropped.
From then on the pieces continued falling in place for Neurotic November; within a few months Paiste, the hands behind the magical drumwork you can hear on the ‘Checkmate’ video, had joined the outfit. Hip hop head and guitar maestro Nig would soon make the group a quartet and Yoshii, a Music Major, arrived shortly after to become the fifth and last member of Neurotic November. The diversity in cultural and musical backgrounds is what sets this bunch of metalheads apart from any other act in the genre. It is why you’ll hear the screaming Dirty launch into a bit of rap in some of NN’s cuts.
This band unapologetically takes it to extremes, something you’ll quickly come to terms with within a few seconds of watching ‘Checkmate’. You’ll feel like you’ve walked into an ambush as Dirty attacks you with a chilling torrent of yells almost as soon as the clip loads. The haphazard guitar riffs and cymbals follow soon after, settling on the ceiling of your cranium like a delicious migraine that you don’t want to go away. Extremes are also evident in the stretched earlobes dangling on the sides of Dirty and Bear’s heads. This is by design; the two made a pact to make their bodies a walking testament to their commitment to music. Not only did they get their ears done, they inked themselves as much as the tattooist’s needle would allow.
But far from painful torture, metal is the band’s first love. They live for getting on stage and shredding speaker diaphragms with their raucous, energetic brand of rock ‘n’ roll. Seeing kids crowd into mosh pits as they administer blood curdling screams accompanied by frenzied instruments makes all the sacrifices- financial, mental and physical fade into insignificance.
