Born 24 years ago in Memphis, Tennessee, this crooner got an early start to his career as an artist. By the time he was six Nevi Brandan was already exploring his vocal abilities, performing at showcases. Among the people who have shaped his musical style Brandan counts a number of R&B heavyweights from the nineties; the likes of Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Usher and Brandy. He also borrows from the rock n roll world as an admirer of Lenny Kravitz. Before he moved from his hometown to Atlanta, Georgia, where he’s currently based, Brandan managed to scoop a ‘Best Upcoming Artist’ award in Memphis.
Brandan describes his music as ‘universal’ and you can hear in this number that he has not restricted himself to the elements of classic R&B, though the song was composed as a semi-remix to Babyface’s hit ‘Whip Appeal‘. Fused into ‘Whip It’ are ingredients that you hear in hip hop and radio-friendly pop tunes. The vocal delivery may not be pitch-perfect but the sincerity and raw talent in there are undeniable. So is the dense sensual ambiance created by the instrumental arrangement. I think Brandan and his team are onto something, what about you, respected reader? Hate it or Love it?
