It’s been a whirlwind rise to the top for Gloucester-born singer-songwriter Nathan Sykes ever since he severed ties with boy band The Wanted two years ago. In May 2015 he released his debut single as a solo artist ‘Kiss Me Quick‘ and it didn’t take long for music lovers to warm up to his deep, raspy tenor, and his boyish charm. On his next single Sykes showcased his versatility, trading the high energy and dance moves of Kiss Me Quick for slow, passionate crooning. The video for ‘Over And Over Again‘ tugs hard at the heartstrings, telling the story of a love that stands the test of time. Then Nathan switched it up again, dropping the funky ‘Give It Up’, which featured rapper G-Eazy, and a tight remake of Blackstreet’s ‘Don’t Leave Me’ on the hook. Its visual caused a bit of controversy and was banned from TV for a few mildly NSFW scenes.
That was back in April. Come end of September the 23 year-old had another treat for his fans, a new single titled ‘Famous’. Again Nathan put himself in unfamiliar territory, going for an old school soul/gospel sound that will evoke memories of Sam Cooke. Even hard-boiled purists will agree that this young Englishman has paid proper tribute to that legendary singer and that musical era with his delivery on Famous. And thanks to this thoughtful composition, a new generation of music lovers will get a valuable history lesson, and hopefully an ear for that 50s soul.
The old-school feel of the song is projected in its newly released video as well. You can see it in the clothes the actors wear, the cars they drive and the mobile homes they change in. Nathan is an actor who falls in love with his co-star but who has to keep his emotions in check as she already belongs to the director. Watch the love triangle unfold below then pre-order Sykes’ upcoming debut album ‘Unfinished Business’ to download the song. The full album will be available November 11.
