A month ago R&B icon Mary J. Blige reminded the world of her awesomeness, if it needed any reminding, with a brand new single, ‘Thick Of It‘. But it wasn’t just another Mary J cut, it was a woman pouring her heart out while going through one of the most difficult times of her life. It’s been in the public domain for a while now that the 90s soul star is undergoing a nasty divorce from her former manager Martin ‘Kendu’ Isaacs. Though they had no kids together, they had been a couple for 13 years. But in July Mary filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. And now we’re learning that Kendu is claiming six-figure spousal support.
Mary makes plain the toll the split is having on her in her new song: “‘Thick of It’ is the divorce and all this stuff that’s going on right now. It’s the heaviness of it and the whole thing…That’s where I am. I’m in the middle of a divorce and it doesn’t feel good. It feels terrible, but I have strength to get through and I get through by any means necessary.” This strength to get through is the theme of her upcoming album ‘Strength of a Woman’, the follow-up to her 2014 project ‘The London Sessions’. Expected sometime before the end of this year, the new LP will feature input from the likes of Jazmine Sullivan and Kanye West.
If you can be sure to catch Mary on the road on one of her King + Queen of Hearts World Tour dates with fellow neo-soul star Maxwell.
