Bonjour! This week we’re taking y’all on a trip to the French capital. Or rather, we’re bringing you a taste of Paris in the form of Malone. More than an accomplished disciple of hip hop, Malone has his own label (Le Temps D’Une Note) under which he has released four records. But if there’s anything that sets this MC apart it’s his humility and eagerness to connect with his audience.
You don’t need to understand a word of French to hear the passion in Malone’s lines. And the message in the song is one we all need to hear from time to time. It is captured in this statement of hope, “Ce qui ne nous tue pas rend plus fort.” What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger is what it translates to. The video, which is all in slow motion rewind, sort of also provides a visual interpretation of the song’s theme. Not really turning back the clock, but having the faith and courage to begin again. It fits in nicely with the subject matter of Malone’s new EP ‘Second Souffle’ (Second Wind) which is available for free download from his website.
“A touch of hope, sincerity and love. That’s how I’d like my music to be perceived.” For me Malone has accomplished this objective with Surrender, and the other four tracks of Second Souffle. He’s also given us an idea of what Common would sound like if he rhymed en francais. But what about you, how do you perceive Malone’s sound? Hate it or Love it?
