In February Macklemore and Ryan Lewis dropped their highly anticipated sophomore album ‘This Unruly Mess I’ve Made‘. The Seattle-based producer-rapper pair had hyped the album with singles like ‘Kevin’, an inspirational look at addiction that featured soul singer Leon Bridges and ‘Downtown’, a sort of rap-infused response to Bruno Mars’ ‘Uptown Funk’. In the same month of the LP’s release, Macklemore and Ryan released its second promotional single, ‘Dance Off’, a cleverly woven tribute to the art of dance that was graced by Hollywood hunk Idris Elba. Don’t worry, Idris doesn’t sing, but he does offer a chill-inducing voiceover, inviting the listener to face him in a dance-off.
In the video the voice is matched by a hat and feathery getup which doesn’t make the actor half as scary as it makes him look goofy. Clearly there are limits to even Idris’ impeccable swag. But this adds to the charm of the video which was directed by Ryan Lewis and Jason Koenig. The camera starts with Elba’s challenge then follows Macklemore into a hotel ballroom where he is two-stepping in front of a mirror. He leaves the patrons showing off their moves and goes to the restaurant for what should be a quiet meal but ends up in a heated dance contest. Finally he heads to the gym where he achieves the same chaotic results.
