Move over world, Africa is taking over. In the recent past we’ve seen artists from the continent prove their mettle on the international scene. It’s now becoming the norm for African pop stars to not only grace huge music awards shows, but also walk away with honors. Most recently Nigerian singer Davido got Tinashe to appear on his romantic cut ‘How Long’ and its lush beachside video. Another top entertainer from the West African nation, Wizkid, has furthered his global renown with his role in Drake’s hit ‘One Dance. Also keen to join the ranks of Nigeria’s internationally known artists is the gorgeous Lola Rae. She was born in Lagos but the 25 year-old songstress has Ghanaian and British blood flowing in her veins. In fact her first encounter with the limelight was as a contestant in Britain’s Got Talent as part of the dance group Mystikal. The crew made it all the way to the semifinals and Lola caught Simon Cowell’s eye, getting herself a deal with his Syco imprint.
But she still chose to establish herself as a singer in her homeland. In 2012 Nigeria got its first taste of Lola when she released her first ever single ‘Watch My Ting Go‘, a tune that would go on to dominate the airwaves. She went on to feature on the works of other established artists like DRC’s rhumba legend Awilo Longomba. Despite her six years in the industry and string of award-nominated singles, we don’t yet have a Lola Rae album to bump. Hopefully her new single ‘Biko’ is the precursor to a debut album. The infectious afro-pop-reggaeton number, sang in a mixture of pidgin English and a native Nigerian dialect features Davido. Shot in the historic town of Epe, the video offers a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage that is drawing the world to Africa.
