In case you forgot, we’re in that time zone; ‘Central Standard Time’. We don’t mean the literal time zone, we mean the highly anticipated new album by Stik Figa which drops January 27 on Mello Music. We gave you a taste of the project late last year with ‘The Ends & Outs‘, a jam you had clear the cobwebs in your mind to really appreciate. Now the Kansas MC is back with more brain food from his soon-coming LP; a typically gritty joint titled ‘Down Payment’. As the title suggests, Stik is expressing his thoughts on his relationship with cheese while schooling us on the mechanics of money:
“Money didn’t change me, neither success, only the fake friends…Gotta take a risk scared money don’t win /Trying to get the quiet money so stop running your lips.”
On top of being a tightly delivered sermon on how currency affects our lives, Down Payment is an illustration of the good things that can happen when some of the best heads and hands in underground hip hop come together. Stik has called in yet another heavyweight producer to lay down the instruments; the Grammy Award-winning Nottz (Kanye West, Pusha T, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes). He has also brought in Slum Village alum Elzhi to lay down a verse.
Folks who love their hip hop without extra flavoring or superfluous additives will appreciate what these three rap geniuses have done.
