If you’re a classic hip hop head you won’t need a second invitation to cop ‘Feature Magnetic‘ when it drops September 16. This will be Kool Keith’s 22nd album, a project that further cements his position as one of the elder statesmen of the game. It will serve as the Bronx native’s first album on indie label Mello Music Group following the re-release of the Analog Brothers album ‘Pimp to Eat‘ in June. The title of the project calls to mind Dr. Doom’s beginnings as a part of the Ultramagnetic MCs back in the mid-1980s. But don’t think for one second it was an excuse for him to reach back to his old rhyme books; the punchlines are as out-the-box as ever and the storylines typically imaginative.
In the new single ‘Super Hero’, Kool Keith is having visions of himself among popular comic characters: “I come from a place where superheroes meet up/The X-Men drinking tea watching chicks with D cups/Spiderman saw Doctor Ox split the top off a New York city bus”. Helping him imagine this twisted new universe is the masked villain of rap MF DOOM. The two had worked together previously on a single by Minnesota rap duo Atmosphere released just last week along with their new album ‘Fishing Blues’. DOOM will need no introduction to those who know their hip hop family tree; he has worked with such greats as Ghostface Killah and Bishop Nehru. Super Hero is therefore another meeting of the greats with bars from some of the genres most revered names. It is also a chance for Keith to show off his production chops.
