It was while listening to ‘Move Love’ on the first of Robert Glasper’s two ‘Black Radio’ projects that I discovered and fell in love with KING. From then on I scratched about for info on this mysterious entity but came up empty. Much later I would discover that KING was a female trio composed of two twin sisters (Paris and Amber Strother) and a close friend, Anita Bias. While Paris lays down the dreamy keyboard work and handles the production, Amber and Anita offer the silky spellbinding harmonies that set listeners on a nostalgic voyage.
The first-fruits of the seemingly spiritual chemistry between the ladies was ‘The Story’, an EP made up of only three songs. Among the people into whose hands that recording landed was Prince and he promptly had the trio flown to North Carolina for a little chat. With this priceless endorsement from the pop legend in their back pocket, Paris, Amber and Anita quietly set about conquering the world. Even before they dropped their first full-length album on February 5, critics and reviewers were falling over themselves to heap praise on the Los Angeles natives. If you haven’t yet copped ‘We Are King‘ I don’t understand how you’re still alive; this record is simply essential to existence no matter who or what you are. Why? Check out the video below for ‘Carry On’. Open your ears, eyes and soul as you walk on clouds, get lost in a maze of shapes and float through starry skies.
