The first time I and most of Kevin Max’s fans encountered him was on DC Talk’s barrier-breaking third album ‘Jesus Freak’. This 1995 project is what more or less informed the world that such a thing as Christian pop rock existed. Five short years later though, the Virginia trio announced they were taking what they called an ‘intermission’ and dispersed into different pursuits. Kevin took the opportunity to reinvent himself as an independent artist and actor while still continuing his poetic exploits.
And like many artists without the backing of a major label, Kevin Max has decided to join the crowdfunding bandwagon. I should make it clear that this is just the second of his 15 solo projects to be thus financed. But unlike his last album, ‘Starry Eyes Surprise’ is a tribute to Kevin’s musical heroes; Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby and other crooners who sparked his desire to sing and helped shape his vocal style. ‘Moon River’ is a jazz standard that was composed by Henry Mancini and John Mercer in the 1960s and Max is not, by a long shot, the first to record a rendition of it. But most of us who got acquainted to him as a rock vocalist will have this surprised grin listening to Max sing in such a vastly different setting. Like the one I’m wearing now. Guess that’s how the album got its name.
