Kehlani first popped on the radar as part of the group Poplyfe which was competing on America’s Got Talent. The group was composed of energetic teenagers and Kehlani was the only lady there. They didn’t manage to win season 6 of the talent show but Poplyfe made it to the finals and everybody, including an awestruck Piers Morgan, was talking about the band’s feisty lead. Not long after the reality TV success, Kehlani embarked on a solo career, introducing herself to music lovers with the ‘Cloud 19‘ mixtape. The world couldn’t help but fall in love the way she blended her love affair with 90s R&B, raw emotion and pure, silky vocal inflections.
Now the Oakland chanteuse is on tour promoting her new project ‘You Should Be Here‘ and to ease us into this new phase of her career, Kehlani has dropped a visual for ‘The Way’. If there was ever to be a mash-up of Ginuwine’s ‘So Anxious’ and Janet Jackson’s ‘I Get So Lonely’, this sensual ditty would surely have been the result. And the baggy black outfit with the tank top conjures up memories of Aaliyah. Growing up as an artist, Kehlani deliberately styled herself after the R&B/soul divas of the nineties so no surprises there. Also don’t be surprised by how sleek a dancer Khelani looks in this clip; she only started singing back in high school after she injured herself while dancing. Even without Chance the Rapper’s cameo, Kehlani’s confident swag and sultry smile would have done it for me.
Here’s another one to look out for.
