On May 6 the long wait for a full-length album from celebrated electronic producer/DJ Kaytranada finally ended with the release of ‘99.9%‘. Released on XL Recordings, the 15-song project is a fluid, mellow and groovy ride through R&B, hip hop, house and soul that will be appreciated by anyone who has an ear for good music. You can get a measure of how eclectic the project is from the features list that encompasses talent from Swedish electronic band Little Dragon to nineties R&B sensation Craig David. After peeping 99.9% back to front you will be compelled to agree with the rating the album gives itself. Looking back at Kaytranada’s history in the game, from a passionate teenager experimenting with Fruity Loops to an opening slot in Madonna’s global Rebel Heart Tour, you won’t be surprised at how good that debut LP sounds.
‘Lite Spots’ is one of the few cuts in 99.9% without any credited features. It’s a highly danceable house number with a bubbly bassline and single catchy line repeated over and over in Portuguese by a female vocalist. In intervals there are old school funk instrumentals laced with devilish guitar licks. As we’ve come to expect from the Montreal artist, the video is quirky and out the box. Kaytranada makes a cute robot in his garage workshop and slowly teaches it how to dance with the help of kind strangers met randomly while strolling.
