With $40 you can get yourself a decent guitar on Amazon and even if you want it with a few bells and whistles, you shouldn’t expect to spend much more than $100. But when auctioneers wanted to put up a guitar that was cradled by the late great Beatle John Lennon, they targeted between $600,000 and $800,000. A guitar is just a guitar, you may say, but this 1962 J-160E Gibson is the very instrument that rock n roll pioneer used to play the chords you hear on the hits ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ and ‘She Loves You’.
To be fair, Lennon bought the guitar for $242, and that was a lot of money back in the sixties. But whatever inflationary adjustments you make, there’s no way that amount can rise into the hundreds of thousands. But even the auction house was in for a shock when actual bidding began on Saturday evening. The guitar ended up being bought for a colossal $2.4 million. There’s a little mystery attached to this sacred guitar; it has been missing for more than 50 years as it was stolen after a 1963 Beatles show.
But still I’d say two million is a bit on the steep side considering a 2012 auction of hundreds of Michael Jackson memorabilia yielded $5 million in total. What say you, dear reader? Is it me who doesn’t understand true fandom?
