This writer is always down for a hit of 90s R&B, wherever it comes from, whatever form it finally takes. And this morning his craving was satisfied by young Jacob Latimore’s new song ‘Mutual’. The keyboard work on this number will remind some of Keith Sweat’s ‘Twisted’ or ‘Anything is Possible’ by gospel group Youth Edition. Or most any R&B hit from the mid-90s. Warm and sad, like a deep blue sky when the sun shines after it’s rained. But when the beat drops you remember you’re in 2016- there’s a bit of trap in the drums. The raw expression in the lyrics, spiced with a few cuss words, serves as another reminder that you’re on this side of the new millennium.
“All you ever needed was some love and attention/Just a little time just to show that you’re different/From all the other hoes that I know/Just names in my phone.”
But even if you’re staunchly anti-profanity, you still won’t help but be infected by the mellow mood conveyed by Latimore’s passionate, note-perfect vocals.
So despite them plying their trade in the same genre of music, you know there’s no relation between this Latimore and the other Lattimore, the one who sang ‘For You’. Jacob discovered fame quite early in his career, releasing his first ever hit single at the age of 10. ‘Best Friend’ received generous airplay on Disney Radio back in 2006, and his next single, ‘Superstar’, released a year later, charted on the Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
In 2010, he signed his first deal with a major record label when he joined the Jive Records artist rota. This is about the time Latimore’s acting career began to take off with him scoring roles in film and TV productions. But he kept the singles coming; he dropped ‘Like Em All’ (2011) and the T-Pain-featuring ‘Heartbreak Heard Around the World’ (2014) are just two of many tracks Jacob released in the recent past.
Now, ten years after his first single, Latimore is ready to release his first full-length album. Going by the title ‘Connection‘, the 11-track LP is due out on December 9 but already available for pre-order. Fans have got a feel for the new project from such cuts as ‘Climb’ and ‘The Real’. To further excite their taste buds, Jacob has released yet another song from Connection, the Mutual we’ve described above.
