This year Glastonbury witnessed the emergence of one of the coldest upcoming grime exponents, Dorchester’s own Isaiah Dreads. It was his second time the motor-mouthed lyricist has graced this international music spectacle held at the Worthy Farm; the first time he performed there he was just 15. As an 18 year-old he has established himself as one the brightest stars coming out of the UK rap scene. Not long after celebrating his birthday he paid a visit to the BBC studios where he burned down the booth with a blazing 9-minute freestyle backed by Charlie Sloth. ‘Fire in the Booth’ indeed. Come summer Dreads hit the festival scene with a vengeance, first lighting up the Great Escape Festival before tearing up Glastonbury.
He then set about recording and releasing some of that heat starting with the ‘Victory Freestyle‘ and following it up weeks later with the ‘Olympia Freestyle’. For this latest drop Westy and Audioslugs offer a catchy, trap canvas which Dreads color up with powerfully delivered punchlines. And the video goes to show that the young MC doesn’t need much in the way of props to rock a show. Just give him a beat and a mic and he’ll do the rest. One thing that sets Dreads apart from other teenage rappers is the depth of his lyrical content; he doesn’t mindlessly copy what other people spit about. In this his latest freestyle you can hear him calling out wannabe gangstas who flaunt cash pics and call girls b*tches on social media.
Hope there’s a full-length project coming out soon from this exciting prospect.
