Yesterday the eagerly anticipated TIDAL X:10/20 concert finally went down at the Barclays Center. The event was a charity gig featuring some of the hottest names in the industry today and was the first of a series of concerts under the TIDAL X title given as a thank-you to the streaming service’s one million subscribers. Among the names on the bill were Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Usher, Nicki Minaj, Meek Mill, Beyoncé and Jay Z himself.
It was a night of many highlights but one the crowd went crazy for was the moment Nicki and Bey teamed up to perform their hit ‘Feeling Myself’ live for the first time ever. Clad in black and pink leotards respectively, the ladies slew both vocally and with the eye-popping dance-off with their dance crews. Beyoncé joined her husband onstage to perform ‘Holy Grail’ rocking a fur coat over her jumpsuit. As Hov spit his bars Bey was up and down the stage and they eventually left the stage arm in arm to deafening applause.
Jay Z also shared the stage with Rick Ross, who performed with MMG label mate Meek Mill. While the performances were energetic, they were more or less what you’ve come to expect from these MCs and the scene became all too familiar when DJ Khaled and French Montana rocked up. Usher’s performance of ‘Chains’, though, was something out the box. Usually the crooner would be moonwalking across the stage, torso exposed. But this time he had all his clothes, and a pair of handcuffs on as he sang boldly against injustice with singer Bibi Bourelly at his side. Brooklyn native Nas showed up to back Usher, reminding the audience of Eric Garner and other recent examples of police brutality.
