Grammy-winning jazz sensation Gregory Porter is back to charm us with another helping of that home-grown vocal jazz. Two years ago the Sacramento native took the world by storm with ‘Liquid Spirit’, his third studio album. The title track of that crossover success struck a chord with music lovers beyond the confines of jazz, with an EDM-infused remix beguiling crowds at Ibiza. Now after the dust has settled on that monumental release, Porter has judged it the right time to introduce fans to the next phase of his music, ‘Take Me to the Alley’. Which really is a return to his roots; he has teamed up with long-term collaborator producer Kamau Kenyatta and members of his original core of instrumentalists among them pianist Chip Crawford and bassist Aaron James.
This 12-track offering which will be available from May 6, is Porter’s second album on the renowned jazz imprint Blue Note Records. As we count down the hours to Take Me to the Alley’s release, we can get warmed up with two singles debuted a day ago. ‘Don’t Lose Your Steam’ is a dose of inspiration aimed at anyone with dreams. The song was actually penned for Porter’s three year-old son, but you are free to take the words and the music for yourself if you’re stuck in a rut or feel weighed down. Let the piano, organ, drums, horns and Gregory’s rich tenor lift you out of your gloom and fill you with hope. The second installment of the new album is equally uplifting, though from a slightly different perspective. The singer is grieving over lost love but his heart is “holding on, and it’s holding strong”. This moody number has a distinctively jazzier edge than the other single and pulls harder on the heartstrings.
