The music gods can be overly generous. They’ve given us The Beatles, Prince, Led Zeppelin, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Frank Zappa, Public Enemy, Jimmy Hendrix, The Wu-Tang Clan, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson. But they can also be exceptionally vindictive. When they’ve had enough of you, they will do anything to make sure you fade into obscurity. Take the case of Pretty Ricky. The oh-so-raunchy-we-make-R-Kelly-blush Miami-based outfit released their first single in 2004.
‘Grind With Me’ was featured on the brothers’ 2005 debut album ‘Bluestars.’ The album sold over 800,000 and was very popular with urban radio stations. They followed it up with ‘Late Night Special’ in 2007, which reached the top of the Billboard 200 charts. Lead singer Pleasure P left the group to embark on a solo career and was replaced by 4Play. ‘Eighties Babies’ was supposed to be their album but was shelved after it was leaked. 4Play left soon after that and was replaced by Manny I-have-a-dumber-nickname-than-the-entire-band ‘Lingerie’ Deanda.
They released an album titled ‘Pretty Ricky’ in 2009, because ridiculous band names are less ridiculous when you say them twice and Lingerie left the group. The music gods finally had enough and it was the end of the group. We have another explanation. The music gods, being the exceptionally vindictive bastards that they can be, wanted to punish Corrie Blue ‘Slick Em’ Smith, Spectacular Smith, Pleasure P, and Diamond Blue Smith for that ridiculous band name and made them disappear.
Well, for a few years at least. The original group members reunited in 2015 to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of their first album. They released a single titled ‘Puddles’ that same year. And you can bet it was as raunchy as the rest of their music catalogue, enough to make even the naughtiest Music Lover blush. Pretty Ricky plans to release a sequel to ‘Bluestars,’ their most successful album. So get your dirty mind on point Music Lover. Looks like it’s “gonna” be another naughty ride with Pretty Ricky!
