The English R&B group’s original line-up consisted of Kelle Bryan, Louise Redknapp, and sisters Vernie and Easther Bennett. Formed in 1992, the group achieved international success, selling 10 million records worldwide. Their first album, entitled ‘Always and Forever,’ was released in 1993 and sold over a million copies in the UK.
‘Power of a Woman’ was the group’s second album and it proved a success. It produced four hits including ‘Good Thing’ and ‘I Am Blessed.’ In 1995, they performed ‘I Am Blessed’ at the Vatican for Pope John Paul II. Their first UK No.1 came in 1997 from a collaboration with Bebe Winans titled ‘I Wanna Be the Only One.’ The song was taken from their third album, ‘Before the Rain.’
So Where Did They Go?
It seems three has always been a crowd for the Bennett sisters. Louise Redknapp left the group soon after “Always and Forever,’ going on to pursue a successful solo career.
In 1998, just one week after their Party in the Park performance, the Bennett sisters sacked Kelle Bryan via a fax from their solicitor because that’s how it’s done in show business. And because the devil will kick you in the teeth when you are down, Bryan was diagnosed with Lupus and consequently forced to abandon any plans for a solo album. She launched an artist management company called Red Hot Entertainment.
The Bennett sisters went on to recruit a new member, TJ Arlette, and naturally she lasted only a few days in the group. The sisters carried on as a duo, releasing ‘Eternal,’ which charted poorly despite positive reviews. Soon after, the group was dropped by EMI.
In 2014, the group reunited for the British television show ‘The Big Reunion’ sans Redknapp. This led to their 1997 greatest hits album climbing the charts again.
