If you’ve been longing for a dose of 80s pop, boy have we got a treat for you today. But if you are a Blood Orange fan, chances are you’ve already partaken of this club-ready gem. It’s called ‘Better Than Me’, and I must say the first time I heard it I was reminded of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’, ‘Just An Illusion’ by Imagination and other such tunes that made childhood that much more enjoyable. The track is not all retro though, something in the drums and the piano strokes remind you you’re in 2016. This is the unique gift Dev Hynes, the artist formerly known as Lightspeed Champion, now going by the Blood Orange moniker, has. And it is a gift that has been taking shape from way back when the East Londoner started out with the punk band Test Icicles to when he began making music as the Lightspeed Champion.
Better Than Me, which features singer Carly Rae Jepsen, is from Dev’s latest album ‘Freetown Sound‘, his third as Blood Orange. Unsurprisingly, many publications have ranked the project among the best in 2016. It was a dedication to the capital city of his father’s homeland, Sierra Leone which nonetheless bore a strong social statement shaped by the racial tensions in the US. The universality of the themes in the album is reflected in the eclectic, genre-blind music that underpins it.
The video for Better Than Me reminds us how well-rounded Dev is as an artist. He is not only the video’s director, he is the lead choreographer and lead dancer. You have to say he’s done a great job at bringing out the 80s feel in the scenes.
