For a 19 year-old, Eli Raybon has been through a lot; he has taken up a computer science and math double major, dropped out of college, recorded a full-length album and performed live more than 100 times. That’s more than many of us achieve in a lifetime. So who is this superhuman kid? No one but a young man from Mississippi, Louisiana with bigger dreams than his small town upbringing could fulfill. Having come from a musical family (his dad is an artist and his uncle is part of country band Shenandoah), it didn’t take long for the music bug to bite Eli. He had become a handy guitar player by the time he was in his teens and by his 17th birthday he was waist-deep in recording and production. The following year he added a full-length album, titled ‘The Machine & My Dilemma‘, to his list of precocious accomplishments.
However, it wasn’t full steam ahead for Eli’s career as a musician from there; he focused his energies on academics, signing up for a double major at a New York university. But his dreams came calling again and he couldn’t say no; armed with his musical gear and a heart brimming with hope, Eli drove across the country to Los Angeles. While shacking up with a couple of friends he settled into a habit of playing around with his equipment into the wee hours, upsetting some neighbors in the process. Amid the complaints and eviction threats, a funny thing occurred to Eli; he could remember his dreams (literal dreams), down to their minute details. These mental images formed a good part of the material in Eli’s new album.
‘Green’ is the title of the new project, scheduled for release on January 27. The color is a reminder of how much he still has to learn as a musician. It is also the color that gets his creative mojo going. Stylistically it is a radical departure from the template he used to make his debut album. Eli has been kind enough to give us a glimpse of what’s to come with the release of ‘Unsymmetrical’, the LP’s first single. It is a song about rebelling against the system and doing what you really feel inside. It comes with a warning that time is running out. Check out the song’s newly released visuals below and stay tuned to the Eli Raybon website for further updates.
