A couple of weeks back we had the pleasure of enjoying a titillating new visual from 20 year-old Oakland songstress Khelani. Now we bring you new music from yet another precocious talent, this time from the other side of the pond. Dua Lipa is a singer-songwriter from London who caught the world’s attention with soulful covers of hits from Mila J and Alessia Cara, posted on YouTube. She has been given the chance to do her own thing, and boy hasn’t she grabbed it with both hands and feet. Her new song ‘New Love’ is quite simply sticky ear candy.
The first thing that hits you as the clip gets rolling is the richness of Dua’s voice. Soon as her alto spilled itself onto the ragamuffin-style drums it transported me to the first time I heard another singer from the UK who wowed the world with her jazzy style. Amy Winehouse herself was only out of her teens when the world started taking notice of her. And at all of 19 years of age, Lipa is displaying arguably the same level of maturity and sure-footedness. Besides her majesty as a vocalist, Dua astounds with the depth of her songwriting. While ‘New Love’ sounds like the pining of a lovelorn youth, Dua had her struggles as a budding artist in mind when penning this mournful yet inviting ditty. This lively, care-free visual will only make the world yearn for more of her.
Dua’s got it all and definitely a name we’ll be hearing a lot more of. So get used to saying it.
