The 2016 Forbes rich list for hip hop is out and it contains few surprises if you have been following developments in the entertainment world. That P. Diddy, Jay Z, Drake, Birdman and Dr. Dre make up the top five won’t shock keen hip hop heads. That 50 Cent has fallen out of this exclusive club will also raise few eyebrows given his recent bankruptcy proceedings in court. It’s no secret that Bad Boy is no longer the entertainment powerhouse it used to be in the 90s. So how has Puff Daddy stayed the highest paid artist in the world for four years running? Well, as you know Diddy has his fingers in Ciroc Vodka, Revolt TV and Sean John among other ventures and they’re clearly not doing badly. According to the latest Forbes list Mr. Combs has a net worth of $750 million so he probably won’t lose his beauty sleep if his comeback LP ‘No Way Out 2’ turns out an epic fail.
Right on the tails of Puff’s leather coat is Dr. Dre whose estimated wealth tots up to $710 million. At least the legendary Compton producer-MC can attribute some of his stash to album sales. His soundtrack to the ‘Straight Outta Compton’ movie debuted at number two on Billboard and has gone on to be certified gold in the US and the UK. And remember he co-produced the high-grossing film itself. But the Funk Doctor still owes most of his income to his colossal deal with Apple for his Beats line of headphones. A lot of his cheddar also comes in the form of royalty checks from projects he’s been involved in. Coming in at a not-so-distant third is Roc Nation boss Jay Z with a net worth of $610 million. He may have stagnated in third place from the third year running but the value of his wealth has jumped up by $60 million. The bit of business he did in acquiring TIDAL is proving yet another masterstroke. Way to stick it to all the doubters who prophesied doom at the streaming service’s unveiling.
The number four slot goes to the recent butt of countless Internet memes, Cash Money CEO Birdman. While some images depicted Baby photoshopped with the crying Michael Jordan head, the 47 year-old is laughing all the way to the bank where some of his $110 million wealth lies. No surprise with an artist roster that includes Nicki Minaj and Drake, arguably hip hop’s two biggest names currently. Wrapping up the top five is Drizzy himself whose work in the studio and on stage, and lucrative endorsement deals, have seen him raise his net worth to $60 million. At the rate ‘Views From the 6’ is selling and the extensive ‘Summer Sixteen Tour’ with Future set to kick off in July, don’t be surprised if he breaks through the $100 million mark in next year’s list.
